I had a chance to slip away and do a short float trip with my neighbor Josh on April 24th.  Josh struck first with his 1st smallmouth for the 2016 season!  All up all in we landed and released over 20 fat rock bass and a few smallmouth.  Both of us had long distance releases on a couple of nice smallies; we'll be back hunting for them soon!  I was happy to be back on the oars!

Hybrid White Bass are starting to Run!Here in central Indiana fall fishing means two things. The smallmouth will be hot and the Hybrid White Bass will run. Like steelhead fishing up North, the difficulty is being in the right place at the right time.

Jr. and Cecil headed out to lake Monroe this past week to see how things were shaping up with the fall Hybrid bass (a.k.a. Wipers) run. They have not taken off just yet but the weather is getting colder and rainier which means the fishing for these hard fighting bass will be on soon.

They did manage to catch one little bass. Now it is a matter of keeping an eye on the weather and being ready to hit the water when the time is right. Get your gear ready!

The emerald Isle still shines in Michigan. Our trip to Michigan has started with three days on Beaver Island fishing for big Great Lakes Carp with Indigo Guide Service.  Rain moved in our first night and lingered in the morning but by noon had blown through. Other than that the weather has been perfect. Scott Heeg and I fished around Beaver Island on Sunday. Slow to find and get shots at fish until after the clouds moved out and the sun shown through the crystal clear waters of Lake Michigan. In the afternoon the fish started to pop up all over but were very skiddish. Delicate wading and even more delicate presentations were the name of the game. We did manage to stick one fish and get him landed.

Today found us in  clear skies all day long. Heading over to Garden Island with Kevin Morlock we began stalking the shores for Carp. We found a number of cruisers and soon found a back bay with lots of carp. Scott landed the first fish, a nice 15 pounder that almost ran all of his backing off of his reel. Not too long after that I bagged another that could look like Scott's fishes twin and this guy took out almost 200 yards of backing. Unfortunately, this fish spooked all of the others out of the bay when I hooked him.  We moved on down the shore and had more shots at fish but they were increasingly spooky and the wind was blowing directly at us at about 15 mph. It was a great day with many shots at fish and so much beautiful country to take in. The only low spot was hopping in the boat about 3:30 pm to move to a new location and discovering I lost my Cliff Bugger Barn full of carp flies. We had walked about 3/4 of a mile of shoreline and somewhere along the way it had fallen out of my backpack. Thanks to two diligent friends who went above and beyond for a box of flies it was finally found by Kevin in the brush were we had cut across a point.

One more day on Beaver and the weather is great and all looks promising for our last day. Then off to Sylvania Wilderness.

Our good friend Karl Glander sent us some photos and stories of the big Smallmouth Bass he is getting on his trip to the BWCA area in Minnesota.  If you have never had a chance to fish this area of the US you need to put this one on your list. The country is beautiful, full of history and fantastic fishing. As Karl will tell you.

"We were slowly moving down the bank of the North shore of Lac La Croix, my son Skip manning the trolling motor. With my Polaroid glasses I could see a submerged large rock about 30 foot ahead. I cast one of my friend, Cecil Guidry"s, Hellboy fly so that it would float directly over the rock. The bug had gotten about 3 ft. past the rock when  this dark shape slowly cruised up underneath the yellow Hellboy. I gave the bug just a slight twitch. The water exploded and after a 3 jump battle I landed  this hefty 19" smallmouth. Nice fish. Thank you, Cecil."

"This almost 20" smallmouth ate one of Junior's folded over foam mouse patterns. The bass and the mouse had a staring contest for about 10 seconds, facing each other about 6 " apart. Then I gave the mouse a little twitch. You know the rest of the story. It was a wild fish! Thank you, Junior."

Since we do not have many of those fish that start with a "T" here in Indiana most fisherman and women do not plan their spring around that big "opening day" at the end of April. Instead, we plan our time around a unique run of fish that usually starts around the end of April and continues on through most of May.

I am speaking of the spring White Bass run up many of the rivers and creeks of Indiana. White Bass are actually a native river fish to the Midwest but with many of the rivers in our area being dammed and stocked with shad the White Bass have become a staple in most of the reservoirs. "In the spring, White Bass that inhabit impoundment make their annual spawning run up into the primary tributaries. The timing of a fishery's run is dependent upon a number of factors including water temperature and daylight hours." – Bill Butts, Fly Fishing For Springtime White Bass in The Midwest

For us around here, the run usually starts around the end of April. However, this year the run started about the end of March. The real numbers came into the rivers just recently with the water levels rising due to rain. The run usually starts with the smaller males entering the rivers and creeks and later the larger females will swim up the river. In some systems they can swim as far as 10 miles up stream.

It is not uncommon for people to go White Bass fishing in the spring and catch over a hundred fish in just a few hours. White Bass are voracious eaters and primarily focus on shad. Most any one inch minnow imitation tied in a white, cream or yellow color with a little flash will get the job done. The fly needs to have a little weight to it, not much, in order to get down two to three feet. When you find the right "honey hole" watch out.

A lesser know fish that is often caught among the White Bass is the Yellow Bass. Another fun fish in the Midwest. Read Bill Butts' article on The Drift for complete information about the spring White Bass runs in the Midwest.

I headed out to Eagle Creek Friday evening with some friends to see how the White Bass run was shaping up. The reports I have received are that the run has not really happened yet. People have been getting fish here and there but nothing like the usual. However, this spring has been anything but usual and it may be that the White Bass run never really develops.

Our results were about the same as what we have been hearing, inconsistent. Rex bagged about seven or eight, Scott got three or four, and Jack and I a big fat zippo. However, Scott did manage to bring in the Granddaddy of all Rockbass and I caught two very nice (13 – 14 inchish) smallies. Go figure, I go White Bass fishing and catch smallmouth.  Should have gone smallmouth fishing.
